Why Are Pebbles Placed Under the Transformer

Unit transformers are a common and very important electrical equipment. We often see a layer of pebbles placed at the bottom of the transformer. Why are these pebbles placed under the transformer?

1、 Dry type transformer and wet type transformer

Dry type transformer is a type of transformer that does not contain flammable or combustible liquids in insulation materials. His insulation system usually uses solid insulation materials, and dry-type transformers do not require oil cooling and sealing, making them more environmentally friendly and can be directly installed in load centers to reduce transmission losses.

Wet transformer is a common and widely used type of transformer. His insulation system uses transformer oil as the insulation and cooling medium. Oil immersed transformers have the following characteristics: excellent insulation performance, good heat dissipation effect, large capacity, stable operation, etc.

There are several reasons why transformers usually place pebbles at their bottom:

Support and fixation: Pebbles can provide stable support and fix the position of transformers, preventing them from moving or tilting under vibration or other external forces.

Heat dissipation: The porous nature of pebbles enables them to promote air circulation at the bottom of the transformer, improve heat dissipation, and ensure temperature control during normal operation of the transformer.

Dust prevention: Pebbles can reduce dust and debris entering the interior of transformers, maintain a clean environment inside transformers, and prevent dust from corroding insulation materials.

Drainage and corrosion prevention: The pebble layer can provide drainage channels to prevent water accumulation at the bottom of the transformer. Accumulated water can cause contamination and corrosion of transformer insulation oil, affecting its performance and lifespan. Pebbles can also absorb some moisture, reducing the corrosive effect of humid environments on transformers.
